Chapter 18

The Measure

Silas

I stepped through the portal into the organized chaos of a trauma unit on the other side of the country. I stumbled backwards and toppled a metal cart as medical personnel rushed around Bear’s prone wolven body.

Someone in full surgical gear pointed at me. “Get him out of here!”

A male nurse gripped my arm. “Come with me.”

The rest of the team had put the massive wolven onto a gurney and raised it as bright lights flickered on. The buzz of clippers reached my ears as another team prepped a massive IV bag.

The nurse gave my arm a tug. “They must prepare him for treatment. You can observe from the surgical theater.”

I let the man lead me out of the room and down a wide, tiled hallway. “What kind of surgery are they going to do?”

“They’ll remove any blade fragments and do temporary internal repairs before they clean his blood enough for him to safely shift into his mortal form.”

He opened a door and flipped on the lights to a viewing room with a large glass wall to one side. “If he survives the shift, he’ll have silver sickness to deal with.”

The lights turned on in the room on the other side of the glass wall, and a masked person in scrubs began preparing the area. The nurse continued speaking to me. “If you need anything, there’s a vending area at the end of the hall.”

Numbing exhaustion settled over me as I sat down in the chair closest to the window. “I have no money.”

His voice lightened. “The Measure doesn’t charge us for drinks or snacks.”

He turned back to the door but added, “The intercom buttons are on the side of the room. The surgeon speaks Elvish, but I can translate if needed.”

Before he left, I called out. “How can I get news about what’s happening back at home?”

“I can’t help you with that, but I’m sure someone will find you once they settle things on the battlefront.”

Bear was wheeled into the brightly lit room on his stomach and surrounded by a team of medical professionals. I’d never seen Bear’s wolven like this. All my life, he’d been the rock of the family. Now that rock was shattered.

What were the rest of my family doing? Had Darius and Cassius gotten Hardley back yet? Was she okay? I refused to think of any other scenario as the hours ticked by.

They removed the knife fragments and had two IVs running his blood through a machine before feeding it back into his body.

The door opened, and the male nurse stepped in, looking exhausted.

“My name is Curt, by the way.”

I stood up as they wheeled Bear’s wolven out of surgery. “Silas.”

“We could stabilize the wolven, but we used a heavy sedation to keep him quiet. They are taking him upstairs for observation and recovery.”

I followed Curt down the long hallway to a bank of elevators. He used his key card to call one to this floor. “You won’t be able to move around freely, but if you need to step outside or anything, someone will be available to escort you.
